Pots Point Sydney NSW Equipment Roland R09 Handheld Through very good timing I have been flown up to Sydney for two days to do some lecturing at The Australian Film Television and Radio School. Had it been next week I would have started my new job and been unavailable so this was a good opportunity. The hotel room in which I am staying has a light with a fluorescent bulb that is flickering. The sound is the really cool buzzing clink sound of the light trying to stay on. Unfortunately I only have the R09 on me up here so this is going to be more of a reference recording than something to add to the library. The R09 just can’t handle quiet signals very well without adding a bit of a hiss to it. I will make sure I find a similar light setup when I have settled in Melbourne and rerecord it with my main rig to get a good quality recording. I did however get a good recording of my room door which had a nice clunky latch, and the hotel lift which was also nice and clunky (but thankfully safe). Yet another case of “Never travel without a recording device”

Caves Beach NSW Equipment Zoom F4 Sennheiser MKH 60 Boom pole array The weather continues to get warmer and in fact we have a beautiful sunny morning to celebrate the 1st day of spring (Opposite seasons to the Northern Hemisphere remember :-) ) We went for a walk along the beach to see the caves that give caves beach its name. It was nice to walk along the beach and the caves were interesting, but beaches pretty much only allow for one thing to be recorded and that’s the ocean. Retuning to where we were staying however I got a few interesting bird sounds and a very VERY aggressive Chihuahua. Again I think it might have been reacting to the fluffy cover on my mike, but it amazes me that such a small animal can sound so aggressive. I think I will have to play around with the sound and see what it sounds like dropped in pitch by an octave. Angry angry little dogie. Location
Lithgow NSW Equipment Zoom F4 Sennheiser MKH 60 Boom pole array Typically on the day when we are staying with friends who live right out in the middle of nowhere it rains. So on the morning when I was hoping to get some nice clean early morning bird sounds without the contamination of nearby roads or people the whole bush is quiet as a grave. I tried to record their chickens but I think even they were sulking over the weather. I did record a small amount of material, but I am suspecting its going to be of very limited use. Location Batemans Bay NSW Equipment Zoom F4 Sennheiser MKH 60 Boom pole array The weather has been getting warmer as we move north, but also the wildlife has been changing dramatically. Outside our hotel there were a number of Rainbow Lorikeets and some Sulphur Crested Cockatoos. I managed to get a pretty good sample for the lorikeets but only a small amount of the cockatoo. I want to try and get more of the cockies as they are another iconic Australian bird. The Lorikeets has a small feeding pan the hotel owners had put out, this proved really handy as they got somewhat defensive when I was recording them and changed to an aggressive squawk I might not otherwise have gotten. I think the furry wind cover on my mike sometimes looks like another animal. I have had interesting reactions from animals in the past to it.  Rainbow Lorikeet |
